U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) and the Estonian Defense Forces will enjoy greater integration following a virtual signing ceremony today establishing an Estonian liaison officer on the USEUCOM headquarters staff.
“We are excited to welcome a liaison officer from Estonia to the headquarters,” said U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Charles Miller, USEUCOM’s director of plans, policy, strategy and capabilities. “This agreement demonstrates deeper collaboration between the United States and Estonia. Both of our nations clearly benefit from having an Estonian officer assigned here in Stuttgart with us.”
The Estonian officer is expected to arrive this summer and will join liaison officers from 11 other countries in the command’s Multinational Coordination Cell.
"This is a significant agreement for us, one which we have been striving towards for years,” said Lt. Gen. Martin Herem, commander of the Estonian Defense Forces. “Having our own representative at the USEUCOM headquarters will significantly strengthen our cooperation and participation during operational planning."
Liaison officers serve an important role at the command and help synchronize planning efforts between USEUCOM and their home nations. This signing is another example of the close cooperation between the Estonian Defense Forces and the U.S. military.
Currently, the Baltic nation is hosting portions of Fires Shock, a series of fires exercises which demonstrate the ability to rapidly deploy long-range precision fires and joint forcible entry fires across Europe and Africa. Estonia is also hosting parts of the multi-national exercise Swift Response 21. Swift Response is part of DEFENDER-Europe 21.
DEFENDER-Europe 21 is a large-scale U.S. Army-led exercise designed to build readiness and interoperability between the U.S., NATO allies and partner militaries. This year more than 28,000 multinational forces from 26 nations will conduct nearly simultaneous operations across more than 30 training areas in more than a dozen countries from the Baltics to the strategically important Balkans and Black Sea Region.
