STUTTGART, Germany – Joint forces medical personnel from across U.S. European Command and the U.S. met at Patch Barracks in December to collaborate on joint medical support to maximize warfighting readiness across the theater.

This year’s USEUCOM Command Surgeon Workshop brought together nearly 100 people from U.S. military component commands, the Defense Heath Network – Europe, TRICARE Area Office U.S. Navy Region Europe Africa Central, Defense Health Agency, Defense Logistics Agency, and multiple military medical treatment facilities across Europe.

Over the three-day event, the USEUCOM Command Surgeon team led briefings and facilitated discussions focused on lessons learned from previous real-world operations and future planning efforts. Specific topics included medical command and control, medical logistics, theater patient movement and medical information systems. “The workshop provided a valuable opportunity for a diverse group of medical professionals to pursue one goal – enhanced support to the joint warfighter,” said Lt. Col. James Holstein, USEUCOM deputy command surgeon.

“Assessment and planning of theater medical support and risk mitigation across the European theater requires understanding the various capabilities of all the military services and combat support agencies as well as our Allies and partners,” according to Capt. Wayne R. Smith, USEUCOM command surgeon.

“Attendees of the workshop left with a better understanding of joint medical support leveraging the USEUCOM Combatant Command Trauma System,” Smith added.

Ensuring unity of effort in joint health services enables USEUCOM’s strategic priorities: Protect the U.S. Homeland; Project U.S. Combat Power, and Position the Alliance to Deter and Defend.
