Task Force D-Day stands up in Normandy

STUTTGART, Germany – At the request of the French government and civic leaders in the Normandy region of France, approximately 400 U.S. troops will participate in ceremonial events May 31 through 6 June, to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the largest multi-national amphibious landing and operational military airdrop in history.

U.S. European Command has established Task Force D-Day 72 to lead U.S. forces’ participation, which includes representation from eight historical units that participated in the 1944 campaign. The Task Force Normandy commander is Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion assigned to US Army Europe out of Wiesbaden, Germany.

The airborne operation will be facilitated by the 173rd IBCT(A) out of Vicenza, Italy. Under JTF72 command is 21st Theater Sustainment Command; 409th Combat Service Support Brigade; Special Operations Command, Europe (SOCEUR); U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE); U.S. Naval Forces in Europe (NAVEUR); U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (USACAPOC); U.S. Navy, Europe Band; and representation from 8 historical units that participated in the D-Day invasion: 82nd Airborne Division; 101st Airborne Division; 75th Ranger Regiment; 1st Infantry Division; 4th Infantry Division; 4/25th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (ABN); 90th Sustainment Brigade; 29th Infantry Division; Airborne and Ranger Training Brigade.
