Swedish Armed Forces’ Maj. Gen. Johan Pekkari, director of strategic plans and policy, and U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Daniel Lasica, USEUCOM’s director for plans, policy, strategy and capabilities, met in Stuttgart, Germany, July 3, 2024, for bilateral military staff talks. The Swedish and American military delegations discussed a full range of issues – from bilateral security cooperation and military exercise and training opportunities to NATO convergence and respective operational and policy strategies.

The Swedish Armed Forces and USEUCOM have long been mutual members of the Arctic Security Forces Roundtable, a flag-and-general-officer level, military-to-military forum designed to promote regional understanding and enhance multilateral security cooperation in the High North. ASFR is the longest running military forum focused on the Arctic’s uniquely challenging security dynamics.

STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR (June, 26, 2024) An AH-1Z Viper, left, assigned to the “Blue Knights” of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 365 (Reinforced), and an MH-60S Sea Hawk, assigned to the “Dragon Whales” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 28, flies patrol as the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) transits the Strait of Gibraltar, June 26, 2024. As part of a two-day official visit to Lithuania, U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Bryony Terrell, deputy director of U.S. European Command's J5 Strategy, Plans and Capabilities Directorate, and Chief of the Lithuanian Defense Staff Maj. Gen. Mindaugas Steponavičius, hosted the first-ever USEUCOM-Lithuania military staff talks June 13-14, 2024, in capital city Vilnius. During the trip, the two senior military officials also surveyed the surroundings from the Queen Louise Bridge, a bridge over the Nemunas River on the Lithuanian-Russian border, and conducted aerial reconnaissance of the Suwalki Gap, a sparsely populated area between Lithuania and Poland that critically serves as the only land route between the Baltic states and the rest of NATO. The trip underscored USEUCOM's commitment to security throughout the Baltics, notably Lithuania, a frontline NATO Ally on Europe's eastern flank.
