U. S. Navy Helicopter crashes in Mediterranean

Gaeta, Italy - A helicopter operating from USS Hayler (DD 997) crashed into the Mediterranean Sea at approximately 10:30 (local) this morning while performing a routine functional check flight.

USS Hayler lost radar contact and communications with the helicopter while operating approximately 80 nautical miles west of Greece. USS Hayler, which has been joined by USS Ross (DDG 71), is currently leading search and rescue efforts for the three crewmembers, joined by British and U.S. military aircraft.

The SH-60B Seahawk helicopter is a part of Helicopter Squadron Light (HSL) 46 which is home ported in Mayport, FL.
