STUTTGART, Germany - Maj. Gen. Schissler, Director, EUCOM J5/8 co-chaired the eighth United States and Bulgaria Joint Commission meeting with Rear Adm. Georgi Georgiev, Bulgarian Deputy Chief of Defense, on Patch Barracks, Stuttgart, Dec. 4.
The biannual event, usually held in Sofia, Bulgaria, was the first to be held in Stuttgart since the United States and Bulgaria Defense Cooperation Agreement was signed in 2006.
This meeting is a formal, bilateral meeting for senior U.S. and Bulgarian representatives to conduct consultations on matters pertaining to the Defense Cooperation Agreement and associated Implementing Arrangements governing use of shared facilities in Bulgaria.
Also in attendance were U.S. Brig. Gen. Tom Sharpy, U.S. Air Forces in Europe A5/7/9, Maj. Gen. Neyko Nenov, Commander - Bulgarian Land Forces; and Brig. Gen. Rumen Radev, Deputy Commander, Bulgarian Air Force.
Discussions included updates regarding bilateral exercises and construction at Novo Selo Forward Operating Site in Sliven, Bulgaria as well as current and future security arrangements there.
The next Joint Commission is tentatively scheduled for April 2013 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
