Deputy Commander, U.S. European Command

Vice Admiral Charles W. Martoglio was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1978 after graduating from high school in West Hartford, Ct.  His first sea assignment was aboard USS Somers (DDG 34) where he served as Gunnery and Missile Officer, First Lieutenant, and Main Propulsion Assistant. Completing his Surface Warfare Qualification aboard Somers, Vice Adm. Martoglio was then assigned to Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group 5 as Flag Lieutenant.  Vice Adm. Martoglio’s next at-sea assignment was as Weapons Officer aboard USS Bunker Hill (CG 52). A plankowner in Bunker Hill, he also served for 18 months as the ship’s Operations Officer.

Vice Adm. Martoglio then served as the commissioning Executive Officer, USS Barry (DDG 52), the first of the Arleigh Burke-class of destroyers to be built at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss.  Vice Adm. Martoglio commanded USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) during the ship’s first deployment to the Persian Gulf in 1997 and the ship and crew won two Battle “E” Awards during his tenure in command.  Vice Adm. Martoglio served as Commander, Destroyer Squadron 23 and as Sea Combat Commander for the Nimitz Strike Group during Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Vice Adm. Martoglio also commanded Carrier Strike Group 7 and the Ronald Reagan Strike Group during its 2007 deployment to the Western Pacific.

Vice Adm. Martoglio’s shore tours have included serving as Executive Assistant to Commander, Training Command, U.S. Pacific Fleet; Assistant Branch Head, East Asia/Pacific Branch, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations; Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy and Requirements; a Division Director at the Navy Warfare Development Command; the senior Mahan Scholar at the U.S. Naval War College; Special Assistant then Executive Assistant to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations; as Executive Assistant to Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command; as the Director of Strategy and Policy on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations; as the Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy;  as the Director for Operations at the U.S. Pacific Command in Honolulu, Hawaii; and as the Chief of Staff to Commander, U.S. European Command.  Vice Adm. Martoglio currently serves as the Deputy Commander, U.S. European Command.

Vice Adm. Martoglio graduated with highest distinction from the U.S. Naval War College with a Masters Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal (with a bronze oak leaf cluster), the Legion of Merit (with a silver star and one gold star), the Meritorious Service Medal (with four gold stars), the Navy Commendation Medal (with gold star), the Navy Achievement Medal and a variety of unit and campaign awards.
