The twelfth meeting of the United-States Romania Joint Committee was held in Bucharest Dec. 18.
The biannual event was co-chaired by Maj. Gen. Mark O. Schissler, EUCOM J5/8 director, and Sebastian Huluban, Romanian State Secretary for Defense Planning and Policy.
Senior U.S. and Romanian officials discussed bilateral exercise and multi-modal logistical operations conducted at Mihail Koganiceanu Forward Operating Site in Constanta, Romania, as well as current and future security arrangements there.
The meeting culminated in the signing of three Implementing Arrangements critical to deployment of the Ballistic Missile Defense system. Construction of the BMD system -- known as Aegis Ashore -- is the United States’ contribution to NATO missile defense and is part of President Obama’s European Phased Adaptive Approach. Construction is set to begin early next summer.
The Joint Committee is the formal, bilateral meeting for senior U.S. and Romanian representatives consult on matters pertaining to the Defense Cooperation Agreement and associated Implementing Arrangements governing use of shared facilities in Romania.
The next Joint Committee meeting is scheduled for May 2013 at Patch Barracks in Stuttgart.
