Demir Kapija Honors U.S. Emb. for Humanitarian Assistance

On Nov. 7, Municipality Mayor Trajche Dimitriev and Office of Defense Cooperation Chief, Lt. Col. Michael Tarquinto, marked the completion of the construction of a 3-bay service vehicle garage and the renovation of the “Dimche A. Gaberot” Primary School in the city of Demir Kapija.
The American people, through the United States European Command Humanitarian Assistance program provided $90,000 for the material to build the garage bay and an additional $170,000 for the renovation of the primary school including new doors, windows, radiators, roof, and interior. Twenty-four sailors from the U.S. Navy “Seabees” Construction Battalion 74 completed both projects this summer. The projects in Demir Kapija were part of the MEDCEUR 11 exercise which took place at the nearby Krivolak Training Area from June 7-14, 2011.
“I hope that when you are sitting in these classrooms when the weather turns cold, it is not only the radiators that keep you warm, but also the friendship we have developed over the course of this project,” said Tarquinto amidst throngs of smiling children, teachers and parents at the official school opening ceremony. The school renovation was completed with the technical assistance of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Primary Education Project in Macedonia.
Earlier this year, the United States provided $60,000 for two industrial washing machines at the Mental Disability Center as well as $10,000 for a new city water pump.
In a special city council session commemorating the 67th anniversary of the liberation of Demir Kapija, the Embassy was recognized in front of hundreds of residents for its special contributions in the development and promotion of the Municipality’s infrastructure.
Since 2007, EUCOM has supported 27 education and health care related projects across Macedonia totaling more than $2,000,000.
